Heat tape in action. Get the same clean roof using way less energy.

It’s more convenient than ever before to make your home comfortable and energy-smart. Control your home — and your utility bills — with thermostats, sensors and other smart devices designed to allow you to easily monitor, manage, track your systems.

Smart controls are the future: by 2020, 40 million homes are projected to have smart thermostats.

The Lowdown

POPULAR CONTROLS INCLUDE:

Programmable thermostat: These models control your heating and cooling system, allowing you to choose your temperature settings throughout the day. The device will send cues to your heating and cooling system to turn on or off.

Smart thermostat: Controlling your the temperature of your home has never been simpler. Wi-fi enabled — “smart” — thermostats are so user-friendly that there is no programming required and they can be operated remotely. Accordingly, you only use heat when you are home.

Heat tape control: Heat tape reduces the formation of icicles and ice dams on your roof and creates a path for melted water to go. But your heat tape doesn’t need to run all the time; actually it’s more efficient if it doesn’t. Timers and moisture sensors can help regulate the system. Basically, it is only turned on when it’s needed most (above freezing outside or only during daytime hours).

Lighting Controls: These can include timers, occupancy sensors and even daylighting controls, designed to only put light when and where you need it most. These types of controls are getting more sophisticated every day. In short, controls are an easy way to maximize the savings of your LED-retrofit project.

Energy monitor: These monitors allow you to see how much energy you’re using and/or producing hour-to-hour, day-to-day, month-to-month. An added bonus, you can also see if something with your system is off. For example, if a solar panel is being blocked.
